Save that GPA

It’s no secret that one of the most important things in your educational journey is to maintain a solid grade point average, also commonly know as a GPA.  Maintaining a high GPA can say a lot about your work ethic and how seriously you take your job. In essence, you work hard throughout college to be able to qualify for careers that you wish to pursue.  Some employers prefer to hire ideal candidates with higher GPAs, and in some cases, it may be the deciding factor when you have equal competition with other candidates. As also stated in an article in CareerBuilder, many employers are also likely to use GPAs for screening purposes in applicants.

  • Attend your classes- Always attending all of your classes is a good way to stay on top of school work and maintain a good GPA. Missing out on class and lecture time could mean that you are also missing out on important explanations that will not likely be posted on the internet, test reviews, and any announcements that may be made. Attending class regularly also assures that you do not miss out on extra credit opportunities. In addition, many universities have policies set forth for professors to drop a letter grade to a student’s overall grade, that have more than the allotted absences. So it is important to keep in mind that attending class can greatly affect your GPA.
  • Take notes- Taking notes may really sound like a no-brainer, but many students do not realize the importance of taking notes. Listening in class and taking good notes give students the opportunity to retrieve information and important data from notes that will probably be useful later for studying purposes. Additionally, taking notes forces you to pay attention and gives you a better chance of retaining information. Not taking good notes can leave gaps in your studying, which will likely cause you to study less and get lower test scores.
  • Develop healthy study habits- Study habits are very important to the way a student learns and retains information. It is important to study when you are well-rested and calm, to help you understand what you are studying and to help retain information. Studying when sleep deprived, stressed out, upset, or hungry can affect the way you read and understand information. This also means it is best to avoid pulling all-nighters- they will harm your performance and will cause you to be tired and stressed, which won’t help matters.
  • Take your work seriously- The work you do in college will show potential employers later how much you cared about school and your work. Set and practice goals that will aim to reflect your hard work. Get to know your professors so that you feel comfortable going to them and asking for help when you need it. Try to join study groups and surround yourself with other students who care about their school work and grades. Getting and keeping a solid GPA is dependent on several things, but starts with focusing and taking your classes seriously.
  • Be consistent- Taking good notes one day, and studying properly for one test isn’t going to get your good grades overnight. It is important to be consistent with the way you prioritize your time to maintain your GPA. Obviously, you’re going to have other obligations as well, so it is important to be consistent with staying on top of attending classes, taking notes, and studying so that it is effective. Remember, one good grade on a test does not mean that your GPA is safe from becoming lower.
