Find College Grants for Single Mothers
A mother’s work is never done and that’s doubly true for women who are attempting to raise children on their own and get a college education. Many single mothers feel that they don’t have the time or money to get the education they need and deserve, but that doesn’t have to be the case. There are numerous programs in place that can help mothers going it alone to get some assistance, and many grants will cover a large portion of school costs leaving more money for childcare and personal expenses.
Mothers will find that many of the grants available to them are designed to meet the needs of women who are at an economic disadvantage either due to their lack of education or to the costs of raising a child or children on their own. Because of that, women with the strongest economic need may be the greatest recipients of grant support. Depending on the degree that the woman is planning on pursuing there may be additional funding available through private associations as well.
One of the first places single mothers should look to when trying to find college grants is the Raise the Nation Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to giving women grants or loan repayment support so that they can get the education they need to be more independent and have more resources available to them to raise their children. Women can use the grants to cover the costs of tuition, books or childcare.
Women’s Independence Scholarship Program (WISP) is another major source of college funding for single mothers. These grants are dedicated to women who have been the victims of spousal abuse and who now need financial help in rebuilding a new life for themselves and their children. Private sources of funding are also available, especially to women who are entering a male dominated field like engineering or the sciences.
