Methodism became a prominent sect of Protestant Christianity in the 18th century through the guidance of John Wesley, an Anglican minister and Christian theologian. Today is has a large following and there are thousands of Methodist students heading to college each year to pursue a higher education. Lucky for them, there are a number of scholarships offered through Methodist organizations that will allow them to cover some or all of their educational costs.

Students who want to earn a scholarship through their religious affiliation will likely need to fulfill several criteria in order to be eligible. Besides being an active member of the church, students often will need to engage in volunteer or community service work in order to be considered for awards. Additionally, students will need to maintain a high GPA or standout in their academic achievements. Each scholarship will have its own unique requirements, and students should make sure to check each thoroughly before applying.

A large number of scholarships are available through the Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry but students should know that they are only eligible to receive one scholarship a year from these funds. Any other funding will have to come from another source. Any other funds will have to come from a private organization or not be affiliated with the Methodist Church.

There are a number of scholarships available to students looking to work in the Methodist ministry and who are pursuing a seminary or theology degree. Some will require students to do volunteer work or to provide services in exchange for support.
