Mormonism has its roots in the teachings of Joseph Smith Jr, and came to be a Christian denomination around the early 1800’s. Today the church has over 13 million members and missions all around the world, though a majority of Mormonism’s followers call the United States home. Followers of Mormonism who are looking at pursuing a higher education can relieve a little of the financial burden that comes along with college by applying for a variety of available Mormon-focused scholarships.

Mormon students will need to fulfill a variety of different requirements in order to be eligible for the scholarships they are interested in. Some will be based on academic performance and will mandate that students retain a certain GPA. Others will concentrate more on students with a demonstrable financial need for funding. Depending on the major the student chooses to pursue there may be more or less scholarships available.

Because most Mormons are located in the United States the vast majority of scholarships available to them are for study at a U.S. college or university. Students will find that many of the scholarships are offered directly though the church or through schools that are affiliated with the church like the Brigham Young Universities in Utah, Idaho and Hawaii. While these schools are not religion specific some of the scholarships offered by them are and Mormon students can take advantage of these special scholarships.

Those whose career goals include working in the Mormon ministry or who want the chance to experience a local or overseas missionary program can sometimes get money for school through special programs. In exchange for assistance with academic costs students will work with the program to spread their faith and work with local communities.
