For many students, the chance to study in another country is the experience of a lifetime giving them language skills, cultural knowledge and valuable lessons in independence that will serve them throughout their studies and their lives. Of course, this type of study often comes with a heavy price tag that makes many less financially well-off students shy away. This doesn’t have to be the case, however, as there are numerous scholarship programs dedicated to helping students afford the chance to study abroad.

While any student can be eligible for some study abroad programs, those pursuing courses of study what would be particularly benefited by overseas study may have additional opportunities. Students may have to complete projects, work on research or dedicate themselves to service to get many study abroad scholarships. For those truly looking for an international experience without the cost, it may be more than worth it.

Some universities have their own study abroad scholarship programs which help fund the students expenses at one of the university’s sister campuses. Some schools even have campuses in other countries so studying abroad is much less of a hassle. Of course, universities aren’t the only source of help for students looking to study abroad. Many private organizations have scholarship programs as well, though some funding may come with strings attached.

Students studying abroad may be able to take the opportunity to learn to speak another language fluently though a partnership with the Academic Programs International. Scholarships will take students to places all over the globe from Europe to South America and Asia. Depending on the course of study, this can be an extremely advantageous opportunity for students and not one that should be missed due to lack of funds.

• American Institute for Foreign Study International Scholarships: $1,000 to $2,000 awarded each year to up to 150 undergraduate students.
• Malmberg Scholarship for Study in Sweden: $10,000 awarded each year to 1 undergraduate or graduate student for study in Sweden.
• SIT Asia Fund: Amounts vary and are awarded to undergraduate students looking to study abroad in China, Vietnam, India and other Asian countries.
• Dr. Carlos E. Castañeda Memorial Scholarship: $750 to $2,000 to 42 undergraduate students who want to study in several European and South American countries.
• Medicus Student Exchange: $2,000 to $10,000 awarded each year to up to five undergraduate and graduate students studying in Switzerland.
