Whether your dream is to become a chef in a world-class restaurant, own your own, or even to be a private chef to the rich and famous you have to start somewhere. Getting your degree in the culinary arts is the first step towards becoming part of the growing restaurant and entertainment industry. While culinary school can be a large financial investment, students don’t have to go it alone. There are loads of scholarships out there designed to help budding chefs make the most of their potential.
Students enrolled in culinary programs at schools nationwide are eligible to apply for most culinary -oriented scholarships. Some awards are focused on specific states, schools and groups and students may be able to find awards geared towards their personal specialization. These awards are based on academic success and in some cases the talent of the student, though financial need is also a big factor.
Scholarship programs are offered from a variety of sources. Students may be able to get money from the school they are studying with or through large corporate sponsors, alumni, and culinary organizations. Many states, especially those popular with tourists like Florida and Hawaii, will have scholarship programs available as well to serve the demand for qualified professionals in the large number of restaurants. Some large, well-known restaurants like Charlie Trotter‘s also offer scholarships to local students as well as providing students with opportunities to give back to the community.
While state and school scholarships are awarded to students from a large variety of diverse backgrounds, some recipients of scholarships will be from specific racial or ethnic groups. Students pursuing specific career paths may also find themselves the recipients of awards for everything from baking cakes to food science technology.
