The mission of Capella University is to create high quality educational programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels that cater to adult students looking to maximize their personal and professional potential. The school aims to meet this need by creating innovative programs that actively engage and challenge students and give them a relevant learning experience that meet their individual needs.

Capella University was established in 1991 by Stephen Shank, former CEO of Tonka, who wanted to create a place where adults could go to learn, as he felt they were an underserved population. The school’s main offices are located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but students can take their classes from just about anywhere with the online degree programs. Capella students hail from throughout the United States and 56 different foreign countries, and the faculty that teach them are just as widespread, with teachers in every state and in 7 foreign countries.

While Capella does offer undergraduate degrees, the bulk of its student body is made up of those pursuing Master’s or Doctoral degrees. While these students will take a majority of their classes and coursework online, many higher level degrees also have residency requirements that will give them more hands-on experience working in their field and ensure that they are prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation.

Online students will find Capella’s distance learning programs to be well-organized and easy-to-use. When students log on to the Blackboard Learning System, they will find each course divided into a course room, making it easy to find and utilize course materials. Students are given deadlines for assignments, which students can work on at any time during the intervening weeks or days that is convenient for them, and much of the assignment work may even be able to be done offline. Students can work towards a variety of degrees in majors like Business Administration, Leadership, Public Safety and more.
