Eastern Kentucky University is a respected institution of higher learning that offers educational programs for all types of students, including those seeking undergraduate, graduate, pre-professional and professional training. The school encourages students to challenge themselves intellectually and socially by promoting diversity, active communication and discourse, and service to fellow human beings.
EKU was established in 1906 as the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School in Richmond, KY. The school developed into a four-year institution in 1922 and was then known as the Eastern Kentucky State Normal School and Teachers College. By 1948, the school started offering nonprofessional degrees to a more diverse student body, and in 1966 it was named Eastern Kentucky University and became eligible to award graduate degrees. Located in the heart of Bluegrass country, EKU is easily accessible from Lexington, KY. Richmond affords students the chance to actively participate in their off campus community by visiting Fort Boonesborough State Park, and taking advantage of various service, social and cultural activities. EKU also sponsors several regional centers around the state in Corbin, Danville, Fort Knox, Hazard, Lancaster, Manchester and Somerset.
EKU strives to bring education to as many people as possible, including traditional age college students, working and retired adults in surrounding communities, and to countless students all over the world through the school’s virtual degree programs. Students can earn a variety of undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as professional and pre-professional training certificates. Areas of study include Agriculture, Biology, Studio Art, Broadcasting and Electronic Media, Elementary Education, English, Mathematics, French, Nursing, Emergency Medical Care, Paralegal Studies and many, many more.
Students at EKU are active in a number of athletic, social and scholastic programs. The Office of Student Life is dedicated to supporting these programs in an effort to promote students’ self discovery and self development, as well as their experiences working and socializing with a diverse community.
