Hofstra University is the largest private college on Long Island, but the school still manages to serve its students on a personal level. Hofstra University is named in honor of William S. Hofstra and Kate Mason Hofstra, of Hempstead, NY. After the couple died in the 1930s, part of their estate was used to create a tribute in their name. The university was organized in 1935 on Long Island. Today, Hofstra is the largest private college on Long Island, and is located 25 miles east of New York City. Over 7,700 students are enrolled at Hofstra, including full- and part-time undergraduate, graduate and law students. Faculty members are respected in their field and are encouraged to pursue their own research projects in addition to teaching.

Academics at Hofstra University are incredibly diverse at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Academic departments include Anthropology; Management, Entrepreneurship and General Business; Biology; Disability Studies; Romance Languages and Literature; Finance; Computer Engineering; Engineering; Women’s Studies; Drama and Dance; and Chemistry, among others. Graduate programs are offered in the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, New College, School of Communication, School of Education and Allied Human Services, and the School of Law.

Hofstra University also supports distance learning and continuing education solutions for nontraditional students. Two programs are currently offered fully online: a Master of Science in Computer Science and an Advanced Certificate Program in Gifted Education.
