Jones International University claims to be "the pioneer in online learning." The school was founded by Glenn R. Jones in 1993 as the first university that only offered online degrees. Before starting JIU, Glenn Jones established the cable TV network Mind Extension University in 1987. That venture attracted 30,000 students from various colleges to supplement their education by watching lectures broadcast over the network. JIU quickly became a respected institution and was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and a member of the North Central Association in 1999. It is the first completely online university to receive that distinction.
