Notre Dame is a Catholic university located in Notre Dame, IN. The school was founded in 1842 by the Congregation of Holy Cross and its French priest, the Reverend Edward Sorin, C.S.C. First known as The University of Our Lady of the Lake, the school was rebuilt after a fire destroyed the Main Building in 1879. Notre Dame was known as a regional center for learning, and in the 1930s, the school began to attract an international audience, when European scholars in the United States seeking refuge from the Nazis joined the Notre Dame community. After World War II, the school became more selective and hired well-respected industry leaders and professors, making Notre Dame an incredibly distinguished university. It has a tradition of scholarly excellence, has the oldest college publication in the country, has a 95% graduation rate, and a famous Fighting Irish athletics program.
